Théologien, chanoine à Augsburg et à Eichstätt, il était bibliophile et amateur de musique. Il a réuni une importante bibliothèque de dizaines de milliers d'ouvrages qui a été en grande partie acquise par Guillaume V de Bavière, en 1592. Cette collection est aujourd'hui conservée à la Bayerische Staatsbibliothek de Münich.
